Presence

We believe that being firmly planted in the present moment is the first step to everything that is important in our work - listening, understanding, creating, problem-solving and experiencing joy throughout the journey. We strive to be present in our work and interactions.
  • Committing to personal practices that keep us grounded

  • Creating the conditions for our clients to be present so they can bring their full selves to the work

Impact

We believe that being firmly planted in the present moment is the first step to everything that is important in our work - listening, understanding, creating, problem-solving and experiencing joy throughout the journey. We strive to be present in our work and interactions.
  • Holding ourselves to goals around whether clients have actually changed their practices;

  • Selecting clients who are most likely to benefit from our work and whose success we believe will lead to real change for students

  • Regularly convening unbiased experts in the field to evaluate our work and serve as critical friends

  • Focusing clients on practices we believe will most lead to better results for them;

  • Not being afraid to try new ways to tackle old problems

  • Holding a high bar for all aspects of our work - from what our documents look like, to how a room is set up to who joins our team

Helpfulness

We go above-and-beyond to be useful and view it as our job to make things as easy as possible for clients to implement and internalize.
  • Creating tools that people can use with minimal effort

  • Striving to communicate in the clearest and stickiest way possible

  • Suggesting language, protocols and even pictures so it’s as easy as possible for clients to implement our recommendations; and

  • When clients struggle to implement a practice, first asking ourselves what we could be doing differently to help them succeed.

Empathy

We are deeply on our clients’ side, we try to put ourselves in their shoes, and we appreciate how hard their jobs and the challenges they face.
  • Creating the space for our clients to process their day or week, successes or challenges;

  • Appreciating that if there were easy answers to client dilemmas, they usually would have thought of them;

  • Asking ourselves “what would I really do?” when considering client challenges; and

  • Understanding when clients have to prioritize things other than us.

  • Seeking to do our work with diverse teams of stakeholders and team members that reflect the communities we serve.

  • Helping our clients see, value and lean into what makes them unique.

  • Evaluating our engagement processes to increase equitable engagement.

  • Committing to constantly inquiring into the many ways power and privilege play out in ourselves, our systems and the world around us and actively working to combat them.

  • Being respectful and flexible of family and personal commitments so people can pursue their priorities outside of work.

  • Ensuring that wherever possible, our knowledge is shared freely with anyone that asks.

Inclusion

We value the strengths and experiences that each person brings to the work, appreciate how those backgrounds make us better at what we do, and strive to create an environment in which our clients and team have the opportunity to thrive

Realness

We talk like real people and say what we mean.
  • Avoiding jargon like the plague.

  • Allowing ourselves and our clients time and space to grow.

  • Admitting when we need to phone a friend.

  • Being transparent about our concerns

  • Willing to name the things that people are thinking but not saying.
